CHICAGO (WLS) -- You don't have to deprive yourself at summer picnics, just make sure you bring healthy food for you and others to choose from. Nutritionist Vicki Shanta Retelny stopped by ABC 7 to share tips on how to have a healthier picnic.
Take the typical picnic fare and swap it with a healthier option. For example, instead of mayo-laden potato salad, make slaw in a light vinaigrette. Instead of heavy grilled meats, make grilled portobello mushrooms. Instead of sugar-filled ice cream, make fruit kabobs or cups. Swap out sugary sodas and cocktails for fruit-infused sparkling water drinks.
A little creativity will go a long way in saving you needless calories and nutritionally elevating your picnics.
