CHICAGO (WLS) -- The 2017 Warrior Games in Chicago concluded Saturday evening, capping a week of athletic competition among more than 250 wounded service members in eight adaptive sports.

Competitors and their families gathered for a closing ceremony Saturday night at Navy Pier.

Members of the Navy, which hosted the games this year, handed the ceremonial torch to the Air Force which will organize next year's game.

The Chicago games were significant because it was the first time that it was held off a base. Games were held at Soldier Field, McCormick Place, Lane Tech Academy and other venues.

On the final day, swimming competitions was held at the University of Illinois-Chicago facility.

All week, athletes competed in eight adaptive sports, including wheelchair basketball, seated volleyball and archery.

The city of Chicago rolled out the red carpet for the 265 athletes, representing all military branches of government, including forces from the UK and Australia.

"Every day I'm nervous, and then I do my event, and after the event I feel like I am on cloud nine. It's just awesome being here with my brothers and sisters and each branch. I mean, there is so much support between all of the branches that everything just feels wonderful," said retired Air Force Senior Airman Jamie Biviano.

The Department of Defense started the Warrior Games in 2010 introducing wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans to Paralympic-style sports.
