Man fatally shot by Chicago police on NW Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was shot and killed by Chicago police officers responding to a reported domestic dispute on the Northwest Side Sunday, police said.

Chicago Police Deputy Chief Al Nagode said that the man's parents went to a police station to report that he was holding his girlfriend and a child against their will in a home in the 2700-block of North LeClaire Avenue at about 11 a.m.

Police responded to the scene and after setting up a perimeter, they were able to get the girlfriend and child out of the house, but the suspect remained uncooperative, police said.

After police called in SWAT units, the suspect came out of the house and fired a shot at the officers, police said. One of the officers returned fire and the suspect fled north to Wolfram Street.

The suspect ended up on a roof on a home on Wolfram and jumped down into a gangway, where his weapon discharged. The suspect then fired at officers, who returned fire and fatally struck the suspect.

"In the morning before I go into work I heard the police knocking on the door, and they told us to not open the door for our safety, we need to be inside the house," said Lessly Reyes, who lives nearby.

Gilberto Morales captured part of the incident on Facebook Live.

"They were using some code words for positioning themselves, after that that's when one shot came at them and then after that they shot several shots. It was over just like that," said Morales, a witness.

Monday morning, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said that a letter was discovered written by the man who was killed documenting a history of depression and family issues.

No officers were injured in the incident. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
