22 injured in parking lot at NASCAR race

MARTINSVILLE , Va. (WLS) -- More than 20 people were hit by a car in a parking lot at Martinsville Speedway where a NASCAR race was being held Sunday afternoon.

Police said 22 people were injured after the driver of a Chevy convertible tried to pass a Jeep in the crowded parking lot and hit a group of pedestrians.

Nine of those injured were taken to local hospitals. According to police, the majority were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Those injured were between the ages of 13 and 65. Officials said they do not believe anyone had life-threatening injuries.

Investigators do not yet know if the driver hit the people on purpose or if it was just an accident.

The driver of the car was taken into custody and charges are pending.
