Metra: Woman fatally struck by freight train in Barrington

A woman was fatally struck by a freight train early Thursday in Barrington, causing delays on Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line throughout the morning commute.

The 49-year-old woman was struck by the Canadian National train at 2:38 a.m. near the Barrington Station, 201 S. Spring St., according to Metra and the Barrington Police Department.

Police said the incident is being investigated as a suicide.

Inbound Metra trains were temporarily halted, but resumed with "extensive delays" by 7:17 a.m., according to Metra. Trains were delayed by up to 68 minutes, and several trains filled to capacity were running express to Chicago.

The CTA Blue Line will honor Metra tickets until further notice, except for O'Hare, as an alternative for affected customers, Metra said.
