Man tries breaking into Old Town apartment with residents home

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man allegedly broke into an apartment in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood Sunday night while the residents were inside.

The break-in occurred in a third-floor bedroom in the 1900-block of North Lincoln Avenue on the North Side.

Residents Maggie and Macon Foscue were at home when it happened.

"He stuck his head in the window," said Maggie Foscue. "He had clearly removed the screen."

After she screamed for her husband, Macon Foscue was able to scare the man off without a fight.

Witnesses said the man ran to the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Sedgwick Street, where he allegedly battered several police officers during his arrest. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Charges are pending.

In surveillance video obtained by ABC7 from a bar on Sedgwick Street, just a few feet from the Foscue's home, the man is seen snooping around and then, at 11:30 p.m., moments before the break-in.

"Seemed like he was casing the place a little bit," said Mario Davila, owner of Sedgwick's Bar and Grill. "He tried to jiggle our backdoor a little bit, I noticed."

He said the doors were locked and possibly why the man turned his attention to the Foscue's home, possibly climbing stairs and then stepping on a pipe to access their window.

The surveillance video also shows the man being chased out of the alley by apparently two Chicago police officers.
