Plainfield Village Board approves permit for mosque

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- Last month, the Plainfield Village Board rejected the first request for a special permit citing traffic concerns.

But it was a different outcome at a standing room only village board meeting on Monday after concerns about discrimination were raised.

At issue, a proposed Islamic center at a building in a residential neighborhood that formerly housed a church and a Montessori school.

Last month, a permit for the mosque failed to pass a village board vote.

But residents near the site said the issue is about traffic and parking.

Monday evening, the board took a second vote on the permit and approved the measure to a roomful of applause.

The project will move forward, but with some street parking restrictions, and requirements that the mosque have a privacy fence and traffic committee.
