An elderly couple was attacked in their home in Wisconsin, the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department said Friday.

Sheriff's deputies and village of Somers crews responded just after 2:35 a.m. to a report of a home invasion in the 3700-block of 18th Street.

Police said they are unsure if the suspect entered from out of the woods or off the street, but the burglar entered the home of the couple, waking an 84-year-old man with the sound of breaking glass. When he went to investigate, the suspect attacked him and his 83-year-old wife.

Despite not making an arrest, the sheriff said the public should not be alarmed.

"The 84-year-old man inside the house heard the glass breaking and what he did is went and investigated it and he was beaten by the gentleman that had broken into the house. His 83-year-old wife was also in the bedroom and she was struck in the head by this suspect as well," said Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth.

Relatives from Chicago declined to speak on camera, but said their grandparents were in stable condition at a Milwaukee hospital. They were airlifted to the hospital with serious head injuries.

A longtime friend of the victims who lives across the street said the man sought help from him in the middle of the night, but he didn't hear him knocking.

"He's a go-getter, he's probably as healthy and as strong as I am. He and his wife both," said Thomas Pogorzelski.

Pogorzelski described the victims as an energetic and conscientious couple who, like any other seniors, should not have to worry about suffering an attack in their own home.

"I just hope they catch him," he said.

The investigation is ongoing. The attack may have been targeted.
