3 shot in Uptown near Foster Avenue Beach

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three people were shot Wednesday night in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood.

A 19-year-old woman and two men, ages 19 and 21, were driving in an SUV in the 600-block of West Foster Avenue just after 10:45 p.m. Investigators say the shooting happened as the three friends left the area around Simonds Drive and Foster Avenue to find a bathroom. Police said that's when another vehicle pulled up alongside them and someone inside that vehicle shot into their vehicle.

The 19-year-old woman was shot in the wrist, police said. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where her condition stabilized. The 19-year-old man was shot in the arm and was transported to Thorek Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized. The 21-year-old man was shot in the hip, police said. He was also taken to Masonic, where his condition stabilized. All three victims are expected to survive.

When the attack happened Foster Avenue Beach had already been closed for hours and the park was within minutes of closing for the day at 11 p.m.

On Thursday afternoon, some have concerns about the violence but say that won't stop them from enjoying one of Chicago's greatest treasures - the lakefront.

"It's completely horrible. People come here to have fun. You want to enjoy yourself. Not to worry about losing your life or a loved one getting hurt," said beach-goer Ray Hirschmann.

"It's not something I expected around this area," said Kory Deiter, who took her dog to Montrose Dog Beach, which is about a mile away.

"We have too many shootings in the city as it is," said Albert Thorsen, who was accompanied Thursday by his two German shepherds. "It's not going to stop me from coming down here."

Area North detectives are handling the investigation. They have not released a description of the vehicle the gunman was in or a description of the suspect. The shooting may be gang-related, police said.

No one is in custody.
