Chicago Black Restaurant Week runs through Sunday
Chicago Black Restaurant Week kicked off this week, featuring black-owned businesses in Chicago and the suburbs.
This is the event's third year and this year's list includes hidden gems and even a few kid entrepreneurs showing off their culinary talents. ABC7 checked out three of the restaurants, which all focused on building their business and the community around it.
LIFE
Located in Chicago's West Garfield Park neighborhood, Life is a popular new spot that is breathing new life into the neighborhood.
"Life is a community restaurant geared around giving people opportunity, an opportunity to live and an opportunity to eat well. So we live to say we have a balanced menu because we have good food that will put you to sleep and then we have healthy option that will help clean up your lifestyle," said Joe Black, who co-owns Life with his wife, Tonya.
Chef Tonya serves up a signature salad and highly coveted loaded baked potato topped with spinach, broccoli, cheese, sour cream chicken, shrimp and her signature "bangin" sauce.
HIDDEN MANNA CAFÉ
In south suburban Matteson, Hidden Manna Café gives a cozy and welcoming vibe to everyone who stops in. They serving up a taste of their signature shrimp and grits and a little spice with the
jambalaya.
"Our signature style is Cajun creole and of course that is a southern take my family is from New Orleans," said Glynis Harvey, owner of Hidden Manna Café. "So a lot of the menu is made up of dishes that are created from dishes I grew up on."
TWO FISH CRAB SHACK
Near 47th and Cottage Grove on Chicago's South Side, is Two Fish Crab Shack where they are mostly know for the seafood boil bag.
"So all of your food is served inside of a bag and our most popular seasoning, which the seasoning is bottled it is "3 the Chi way" so we're most known for our sauce ... We're also quickly growing to be known for our fried catfish that I cannot keep in stock," said owner Yasmin Curtis.
