NEEDHAM, Mass. -- Two teenagers who were "best friends" died after being hit by a car outside their Massachusetts high school over the weekend.

Talia Newfield, 16, of Needham, died of her injuries on Saturday. On Sunday evening, investigators said Adrienne Garrido, 17, of Needham, also died from her injuries.

WCVB reports Talia's father Craig Newfield thanked the community for its support during "the worst time of our lives."

"We don't understand how two beautiful, young women can be taken from us in the space of about 20 feet on a clear evening on a flat, straight street in Needham. We just don't understand," he said.

Newfield said his daughter and Adrienne were the best of friends.

"They were unique. They were beautiful people. They were loved by everybody," he said.

Both were juniors and members of the track team, which competed Sunday wearing black-and-white ribbons bearing their teammates' initials.

Needham High School athletic director Daniel Lee called it a "challenging and emotional day."

Police responded to Webster and Holland streets, near the high school, at 5 p.m. Saturday where they found the two teenagers with significant injuries, officials with the DA's office said.

Support and resources for students will also be made available during the upcoming week.

The crash remains under investigation by the Needham Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police and the DA's office. Investigators were seen testing the brakes on a red sedan, which was later towed from the area.

At this time, the DA said there are no charges in the case.
