PALATINE, Ill. (WLS) -- The Cook County Sheriff's Department is investigating a report of a stabbing at a forest preserve in north suburban Palatine.

Forest Preserve Police said a woman was jogging in the Deer Grove East Forest Preserve late Saturday afternoon when she was attacked.

The victim said a man stabbed her in the abdomen and then took off running.

Those who visit the preserve often say they can't believe something like that happened on a day when the preserve was filled with people.

"I was out here as well. There was just streams of people, families, I was talking with people, I couldn't even leave because there were so many people that wanted to talk to me about what we're doing out here. Everybody was enjoying it," said Pete Jackson.

The victim was able to drive to a friend's house to get help and call police. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Police only have a vague description of the suspect.
