CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Northwest Side alderman was arrested early Friday morning and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, an Illinois State Police spokeswoman said Monday.

35th Ward Ald. Rey Colon was stopped about 1 a.m. Friday on the Eisenhower Expressway near Homan Avenue, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said. Colon was charged with misdemeanor DUI. More details were not immediately available, she said.

The alderman, whose ward includes the Logan Square area, issued the following statement on Monday: "I'd like to personally thank everyone who has contacted me with questions or to express support during this challenging moment. I have every confidence in the legal system and that justice will be served. I am not at liberty to discuss specifics on the matter as the case is still pending. In the meantime, I remain focused on serving my constituents, representing the neighborhoods that make up the 35th Ward and continuing to provide high quality public service without distraction."
