LANSING, Ill. (WLS) -- A truck leaked several hundred gallons of hydrochloric acid, triggering a HAZMAT situation near 175th Street and Chicago Avenue in south suburban Lansing Thursday morning.
Illinois State Police said the Quality Carriers truck leaked several hundred gallons of acid. The spill was contained to the ground, officials said, and crews used materials to keep the toxic fumes from evaporating.
Traffic on the nearby Bishop Ford was not impacted, but 175th was closed for a couple of hours.
Police have not said what led to the chemical leak, but driver Martin Ortiz said weather can play a factor in some situations.
"You never know out here in the cold temperatures. I mean, it could be a bad valve. It won't open. It won't close. It could be anything. It could be the driver . . . you just never know," Ortiz said.
"The truck was actually here for some valves to be replaced. A couple of different valves. One of the two vavles failed and an uncertain amount of the chemical spilled out," Lansing Village Administrator J. Wynsma said.
No one was injured, and the leak had no effect on people who live the area, officials said.
Some of the chemical went into the sewer, but the Water Reclamation District will clean it up and said it does not pose a threat.
