CHICAGO (WLS) -- As many will be boarding charter boats this holiday weekend, you want to make sure the boat has the right credentials first.
Those who patrol Lake Michigan warn about a rise in illegal charter boat operations.
"If someone offers you a ride when you're walking down the dock, it's probably not a good idea," said Lt. Allison Schloss with the Chicago Police Marine and Helicopter Unit.
Schloss said anyone offering a charter boat ride should have proper licensing and safety equipment.
"It's an illegal operation, and it's cash, so the temptation is there, the economy is down, and it's running rampant," said Al Skalecke of Captain Al's Charter Boat Fleet.
Before anyone goes out on the water with Shalecke, he says there's a lot to do to make sure his emergency equipment is functioning and safety gear is in place. He's run his charter operation for over 30 years.
"It's relatively calm today, but the temperatures are cold, so if somebody should fall in the water, they're in some kind of trouble," Shalecke said.
The last two seasons, Shalecke said he has seen more illegal charters operating around Chicago's harbors.
He urges would-be passengers to check out any captain and the boat before boarding.
"People aren't aware that they have to have licenses, and all the other issues, and they're taking them out," Shalecke said. "I don't want to see anyone lose their life over something like that."
