Body of 1 of 2 missing teens found in Lake Michigan

HOLLAND, Mich. (WLS) -- Authorities say they have recovered the body of one of two teenage Michigan boys who went missing while swimming in Lake Michigan.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed the body of 14-year-old Vincent Green was found Thursday afternoon in rocks along the pier where the Holland-area teens last were seen.

The search for the body of 17-year-old Christopher Mimis was suspended in the late afternoon due to poor weather.

Mimis was a Chicago native who had recently moved to Holland, Mich. Mimis loved to swim, but the current at Holland State Beach proved to be too much for him and Green.

His family in the south suburbs are devastated.

"It's just unbelievable that my brother is gone," said Robin Boyce, Mimis' sister.

"I keep saying 'are you serious.' I just can't believe this right now," said his mother Valerie Milner.

Mimis moved to Holland earlier in 2016 to be there for his four-month-old daughter Aniyah. He was planning to bring her back home for the holiday weekend to meet family for the first time.

"When we see him again, he will be in a box. That is very heartbreaking," said his aunt, Maryland Burnette.

Ahead of the holiday weekend the U.S. Coast Guard urged caution on Lake Michigan after an alarmingly high number of search and rescue cases and deaths throughout the month of August. The Coast Guard responded to more than 200 cases, including 11 deaths.

"For these kids to go out to these beaches, if you don't know how to swim, even if you do know how to swim, stay away from the deep end," said Boyce.

The search for Mimis' body will resume Friday. The family plans to travel to Michigan once his body is recovered.
