A Florida family is distraught after a 1-year-old boy playing with friends died in a parked car Saturday and police want to know how it happened.

Just after 3 p.m., police said a 1-year-old, who had been playing with other kids on Northwest Fifth Street in Delray Beach, was found inside a hot car and may have been there for hours, reports WPTV.

When officers arrived, they immediately began CPR, but upon arrival at Bethesda Memorial Hospital, the toddler was pronounced dead.

Family members are heartbroken.

"Right now Delray Beach police detectives are investigating to try to determine exactly what happened that led to this child being left in this vehicle," said Dani Moschella of the Delray Beach Police Department.

Police said the doors to the car were unlocked.

"Always lock your vehicles if they're in the driveway. If they're sitting in the driveway, hide the keys," Moschella said.

Neighbors said he was a happy child.

Experts say that children's body temperature rises up to five times faster than adults. They can suffer heatstroke in cars parked in the shade with the windows down.
