Charlie Hebdo issue sells out in Evanston, Portage Park

EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- Two hundred more copies of the latest issue of Charlie Hebdo will arrive next week at Chicago-Main Newsstand's two locations, one in Evanston and the other in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood.

Dozens of people lined up early Friday morning to purchase the first supply, which was only six issues for each store. It's the satirical newspaper's first issue to hit newsstands since the deadly terror attacks in Paris. Two masked gunmen shot and killed 12 people, including editorial staff and police officers, at the Charlie Hebdo office earlier this month.

The shooting was the beginning of three days of terror in and around the French capital. Seventeen people were killed before the three Islamic extremists were gunned down by security forces.

The publication's latest cover depicts the prophet Muhammad with a tear rolling down his face, holding a sign that says, "Je suis Charlie." The slogan, which means "I am Charlie," became a phrase of solidarity.

The newspaper had received repeated threats for depictions of Muhammad before the attack.

On Friday, police were near stationed near the Chicago-Main Newsstand stores as a precaution.

"It represents freedom of speech. I'd like to be a part of that bigger message," Francis Bedoya said.

An unprecedented 7 million copies were printed of this latest issue because of the surge in interest. About 300 newspapers were sent to the U.S.

"We are expecting another shipment, a much larger shipment in about a week. So we're going to be taking paid reservations for copies from that shipment," said Eric Ismond, Manager of Chicago-Main Newsstand.
