CHICAGO (WLS) -- Starting Tuesday, The Chicago Police Department will accept applications for the next round of new officers.

The applications are for training for the April 2017 exam.

This is part of the CPD's effort to hire nearly 1,000 officers over the next two years. The department is also trying to increase diversity in its ranks.

CPD Superintendent Eddie Johnson joined ABC7 News This Morning to talk about a change to the way the department will screen people hoping to become officers.

Johnson also spoke on the shooting death of US Rep. Danny Davis' 15-year-old grandson, Javon Wilson, and the violence that continues to plague the city.
