City Council considers resolution on towing companies

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago City Council met Wednesday morning on a number of issues, including the regulation of towing companies in the city.

According to a document filed with the City Clerk, two Chicago aldermen are calling for hearings "on regulating tow companies to prevent illegal tows and other unsavory behaviors by towing operators."

The issue, brought by 47th Ward Ald. Ameya Pawar and 30th Ward Ald. Ariel Reboyras, has been assigned to the Committee on Public Safety and the Joint Committee on License and Consumer Protection.

Though no specific towing company was mentioned, Lincoln Towing is notorious for what many residents call aggressive and unethical practices. Many have stories about their cars being towed from legal parking spots - one woman said her car was towed from her building's parking lot while she was out of the country and was only returned after her alderman got involved.

The company is so notorious there's even a song about them; Steve Goodman, known for "Go Cubs Go," wrote "Lincoln Park Pirates" about the company. There is also a petition with more than 2,800 signatures calling for the suspension of Lincoln Towing's business license.
