GLEN ELLYN, Ill. (WLS) -- Trustees of the College of DuPage voted again for a $762,000 retirement deal for the school's president late Wednesday, despite outrage from the community.
The 6-1 vote came during a board meeting attended by hundreds of people, including many who opposed the deal for college President Robert Breuder.
Speaker after speaker at the crowded meeting criticized the decision to give the outgoing president the hefty buyout package. The deal will pay him nearly three times his base salary when he retires in March 2016, three years before his current contract expires.
Many, like Trustee Kathy Hamilton, describe the buyout package as a waste of taxpayer funds.
DuPage County state representatives also criticized the decision. They are now calling for a state audit of the school's finances.
The board met Wednesday because of concerns the previous vote may have violated the Open Meetings Act. Some alleged that meeting didn't offer a chance for public input.
