CHICAGO (WLS) -- A reported 8,000 gallons of diesel spilled into the Ohio River from the Duke Energy's W.C. Beckjord power station near Cincinnati overnight, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard received a call about the leak just after 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Crews are assessing the damage and working to determine if there is a threat to the area's drinking water, the Coast Guard said.

A 16-mile portion of the river is closed for clean-up. There is about 2,000 feet of containment boom on the scene.

Local, state and federal officials are investigating the spill. Duke Energy has assumed responsibility.
