Cubs, White Sox compete in Crosstown Classic
CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Cubs and White Sox open their series Monday night at U.S. Cellular Field, where fans are getting ready for the game.
The series starts with the news that the Cubs have finalized a trade with the New York Yankees for closing pitcher Aroldis Chapman, whom many Cubs fan believe could be the final piece they need for a long-awaited World Series Championship.
However, before they can think of the postseason, fans on both sides of town are looking forward to the annual series for city bragging rights.
Sometimes the competition for bragging rights gets heated on the field. This is the 10th anniversary of the infamous punch the Cubs' Michael Barrett threw at Sox catcher A.J. Pierzinski.
For some Sox fans, beating the Cubs could be the highlight of the season.
"You don't want to be a Cubs hater, but there's that little part inside [saying] at least give me this and I can get through the season," said Sox fan Karla Moreno.
The series is also good for business in the neighborhoods. Cork and Kerry near U.S. Cellular Field is happy to cater to Cubs fans for a couple days every season.
This is the 105th game in the Cubs-Sox series since it was restarted in 1997. The Sox hold the edge at this point, 55 to 49.
ABC7's Jim Rose ran into a familiar face while on the field Monday night, too.
The Crosstown Classic series starts tonight on ABC7 at 7:00 p.m.
