Metra BNSF line open again after derailment

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Metra commuters experienced extensive delays on the BNSF line after an empty train derailed Monday morning, officials said.

Train #1206, scheduled to depart Fairview Avenue at 5:45 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at 6:35 a.m., went off the rails just east of west suburban Naperville. There were no passengers on the train. No injuries were reported.

As of 1:50 p.m., the derailed car had been moved off the track for repairs and two out of the three rails are open. Metra says it is expecting only minor delays during the evening commute.

"We all just go, "Again. This is another time that it has happened.' It's a common thing. Every once in a while this happens, no matter what the weather is," said Cathy Lopatowski, of Brookfield.

"We were lucky to get through. The conductor told us that it's going to get worse as the morning goes on. They might not have any more trains coming in, so I don't know," said Rena Gorman, of Aurora.
