EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (WLS) -- Residents of a public housing complex in East Chicago, Ind., are suing three companies they blame for the toxic soil under their homes.

The soil is said to be contaminated with high levels of lead and arsenic.

Residents at the West Calumet public housing complex are suing Atlantic Richfield, DuPont and one of its spin-off companies, claiming they operated smelting plants on the site for years and then failed to properly remediate the land.

ABC7 reached out to the companies but did not receive a response.
