Charges in Englewood standoff
Daniel Brown is charged in the six-hour standoff that injured two CPD officers and killed another man.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Police Captain Ed Kulbida, wounded during a six-hour standoff at an apartment building in the city's Englewood neighborhood, was released from the hospital Thursday.

Kulbida was shot twice while serving a warrant for Daniel P. Brown, who was wanted in a series of shootings in Indianapolis.

"One shot was to the head, and one shot was to the shoulder. They did not, luckily, they did not cause a lot of damage. But he's had some issues with the one in his jaw," Dr. Faran Bokhari, Stroger Hospital, said.

Supt. Garry McCarthy said another police officer realized he was injured after getting home following the standoff.

"And realizing that the blood that he had on his pants, some of it was his. Underneath his pants, he had a welt. And when he went to the hospital with that welt, it turns out they X-rayed it and it was a bullet fragment," McCarthy said.

Brown is charged with two counts of attempted murder, as well a first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Dan Jackson, who was also at the South Side home. Jackson, was shot in the chest, and his death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner.

"Evidence suggests that Brown may also be responsible for the death of Jackson ," Supt. McCarthy said.

The shooting took place at the home of Brown's sister, Annette Gasaway, who gave ABC7 an exclusive look inside the apartment. Jackson was her boyfriend, she said, and she did not want Brown in her home.

"He was armed and dangerous," Annette Gasaway said. "I didn't want him in there."

Brown's gun was purchased legally in Indiana, apparently by his girlfriend, police said.
