HOBART, Ind. (WLS) -- The mayor of Gary, Indiana told the family of two young brothers who drowned that the city grieves with them.

A funeral was held today for 8-year-old Terrion and 9-year-old Donel Smith. The boys drowned last month while playing in a water filled pit in nearby Hobart.

During the service, their school principal spoke about the boys' academic achievement. And they will be honored with a resolution placed in the school's archives.

Some who spoke during the service pledged to help the boys' family.

"The community has come together in support of this family in every way possible financially, emotionally and we will continue to keep our arms around them," said Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson.

The pit has since been drained and filled. Police continue investigations into the drownings.
