BOLINGBROOK, Ill. (WLS) -- A 4-year-old girl is in a fight for her life after a crash that killed her mother and 2-year-old brother in southwest suburban Bolingbrook.
At times, it's a heartbreak too tough to bear for the family of Yesenia Quintero and her son, Isaac.
"You get ready for your mom, or parent, your father, to pass. Never a sister-in-law or a nephew," said Jose Manzanares, Quintero's brother-in-law.
Quintero was driving on a frontage road along I-55 Saturday afternoon. Isaac and her daughter, Joslyn, were riding in the Chevrolet Tahoe with her.
Police said a car came off the expressway, went airborne and hit them. The impact caused the SUV to flip.
Quintero, 25, and Isaac, 2, were killed. Joslyn, 4, survived the crash. But she is badly hurt.
Joslyn underwent facial reconstruction and two metal plates were put into her broken right leg. She does not say much, her family said they think she remembers everything.
They said her heart races when she sees her father.
"She just holds his hand really hard," Manzanares said.
The family has many supporters. A GoFundMe page dedicated to Quintero and Isaac continues to grow every day.
They all lived together, cousins growing up in the same home. Manzanares said that home now feels empty.
"It's really hard for me to go to bed. I have to walk into that room. I have to look at the pictures, smell the clothes," he said, before breaking down.
Investigators said the driver who hit them has been ticketed. But that brings little comfort.
"Watching him sign death certificates, for his wife, his son, picking out caskets - it's hard," Manzanares said of Quintero's husband.
Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash.
The family is planning a funeral for Friday.
