Father, son injured in Evanston home invasion

EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- A father and son were injured in a home invasion in north suburban Evanston.

Police said a 76-year-old man was at his home on Dewey Avenue when a male suspect came in and assaulted him around 12 p.m. Thursday. The suspect went from room to room, asking about guns. Then, the man's 39-year-old son came home.

"He took my dad's phone. So my dad didn't have a way to communicate to the police. When I got home, he told me to call the police. So that's what I did, I was on the phone talking to them. And he hit me, and that's when I fell out and he ran out the back door, the door that he broke into," the son said.

Paramedics took both victims to the hospital with minor injuries. They're expected to be OK.

Investigators said the house was targeted, but they have not said why.

One of the victims said three tenants live at the home as well. Police are investigating whether any of them are connected to the break-in.

Police are still searching for the suspect.
