Fraternity members hold peace march after daughter of sheriff's deputy killed

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Members of the Omega Psi Phi college fraternity held a peace march and prayer vigil in the rain on Saturday in the Roseland neighborhood - a week after the fatal shooting of Tiara Parks, 23.

Parks was the daughter of Michael Parks, a Cook County Sheriff's deputy and a member of the college fraternity.

The line of men dressed in purple holding umbrellas, the men marched through the streets where Parks was killed, stopping at the spot where she died near 114th and Stewart in Roseland.

"Three generations of my family grew up in that house near the very spot she lay dead from being shot from random bullets being sprayed at a crowd," Michael Parks said.

Parks, who was also a mother, was one of several people standing in the street when someone shot into the crowd. She was one of three people hit by gunfire.

"I may be tired, I may be weary but I'm never, never going to stop," Parks said. "Never, never, never going to give up."

A funeral for Parks was held Saturday at St. Sabina Catholic Church on the city's South Side. The peace march and prayer vigil was held after the funeral service.

Through the rain, the men passed out flyers in hopes to find out more information about the shooter.

"It's raining violence in our community," said Rev. Richard Keller. "We might as well come out in the midst of the rain to let them know that there is a peace that can come that passes all understanding."
