CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 16-year-old girl was heading to school Thursday morning when she was shot in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Alex, who did not was her full name used, had to walk five blocks to catch the bus to go to school. She only made it to the second block, to the 1400-block of North Kildare Avenue, when she heard gunfire and realized she was shot.

A bullet pierced her right leg. But thankfully, she is already out of the hospital and walking on crutches.

Police said Alex was not the intended target. Her family said a gunman in a gray vehicle was aiming for a man using a U-Haul truck. Alex said she heard two shots behind her and started to run.

"I'm 16! What if I actually could have got paralyzed or even killed from a bullet that wasn't even meant for me? It's too early for that. It was morning and they're shooting already," Alex said.

Her family said the gunman crashed into several vehicles before taking off.

Alex will be back at the doctor's office on Monday to find out whether or not the bullet will be removed from her leg.

Area North detectives are investigating. No one is in custody.
