Historic house moves to new home in Evanston
A home built by architect John Van Bergen in 1928 moved across Evanston to its new, permanent location in the north suburb.

EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- Thursday was a big moving day in north suburban Evanston. A historic house made its way through the town to its new home, in three big pieces.

The house was built in 1928 by architect John Van Bergen, who worked under Frank Lloyd Wright. It was going to be demolished, but Landmarks Illinois decided to save it.

When moving the historic home from Wilmette to Highland Park proved to be too expensive, the group decided to temporarily relocate the house - in pieces - to a parking lot in Evanston five months ago.

Things got underway at 6 a.m. Thursday. The house traveled along Green Bay Road, made a tight turn onto Central, and headed west to its final resting place on Crawford Avenue, on the northwest side of town.
