Hundreds of Cars Snowed in on Pennsylvania Highway

The nor'easter that is blanketing the East Coast this weekend is causing major traffic headaches on Pennsylvania and Virginia highways.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is closed for 86 miles today due to the severe weather.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf estimated about 500 vehicles, including buses, trucks and cars, were stranded. The Pennsylvania National Guard, state police and local firefighters are helping Turnpike teams get the stranded drivers on their way.

The men's basketball team from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh is one of those unlucky groups stuck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Around 4:40 p.m. the players tweeted that they reached 24 hours on the bus and weren't expected to leave any time soon.

Some stranded drivers held Mass on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, drifting snow caused "white out" conditions at Afton Mountain, leaving several cars stuck and disabled on Interstate 64, Virginia State Police said.

Traffic was stopped in both westbound lanes, police said.

No injuries were reported but drivers were urged to avoid the area, police said.
