'I could have just been killed': Victim recounts robbery at gunpoint in West Town

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man who was robbed at gunpoint in Chicago's West Town neighborhood spoke exclusively with ABC7.

After Tim Naughton had a gun pointed at his head, he said he's so afraid for his safety he's afraid to walk in the neighborhood.

Naughton took a quick break from work to move his car when a robber pointed a gun at him near the corner of Ada and Fulton, just a block from the CTA Pink and Green lines.

"I could have just been killed right there," he said.

When a robber jumped out and pointed a gun at him, Naughton had an unusual reaction at first.

"In my head, I laughed a little bit because I was like, man, I don't have anything on me. I was kind of happy," Naughton said.

It was about 7:50 p.m. Monday when Naughton - an operations worker based at Uber's Chicago hub in West Town - had parked his car two blocks away in a lot near Lake Street, and wanted to move it closer to the building when he was robbed.

"He had the gun on the back of my head and in my back while I was going through my pocket," he said. But Naughton only had some cards, an ID and $40 on him.

"All he had to do was pull the trigger once, or maybe get mad that I only had 40 bucks," he said.

But Naughton said he didn't panic. Just the opposite, in fact.

"I tried to stay as calm as possible. I'm kind of surprised that I didn't really freak out at all," he said.

Afterwards, he walked to his office, slowly.

"I could see he had the gun pointed at me. And then he told me to keep walking, so I kept walking and walking," he said.

He was alone this time, but says he won't be next time.

"If I were walking with someone else, it probably wouldn't have happened," he said.

Naughton said he got a good look at the suspect. Area Central detectives are investigating.
