I-Team: 3rd arrest made in pickpocket scheme
An investigation into a new pickpocket scheme has resulted in another arrest, this time in the northwest suburbs.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (WLS) -- An investigation into a new pickpocket scheme has resulted in another arrest, this time in the northwest suburbs.

The I-Team first reported on how pickpockets are quickly running to stores and getting gift cards, then dumping credit and debit cards to shield themselves from the crime. Now a new arrest has been made and a sign that the strategy is widespread.

Stacy Blackwell, 28, of Chicago's South Side is in custody and the latest suspect connected to what's known as a pickpocket gift card scheme.

Northwest suburban Park Ridge Police say Blackwell is responsible for "an area-wide criminal pick pocketing enterprise." She now faces a related felony charge along with three counts of theft. She has not yet entered an official plea and is represented by a public defender.

Park Ridge Police say they zeroed in on her after numerous reports from customers in restaurants who said they had their wallets stolen. Police say in many cases credit and debit cards were quickly used to purchase gift cards before they could be deactivated.

The I-Team first reported about the new trend Friday, used by criminals to separate themselves from the stolen debit and credit cards quickly.

"When lunch was done I got up and picked up my purse and noticed my wallet was gone," said Melissa Maguire.

Chicago Police say Maguire and another victim were recently targeted at busy downtown restaurants, by two suspects.

Christine Dunbar, 27, and Donnel Jamison, 54, are each charged with one felony count of identity theft.

Customers in restaurants are being reminded to be extra cautious. Pickpockets use crowded areas to carry out their crimes. Customers are also told to make sure to zip purses, bags and briefcases.
