CHICAGO (WLS) -- George Krueger, a Cook County Jail inmate, was charged in a murder-for-hire plot to allegedly kill a witness in his current case, police said.

Authorities say Krueger, 37, allegedly met with someone at the jail he believed was a hit man. It was actually an undercover sheriff's officer, police said.

Investigators say Krueger allegedly offered to pay $3,000-$4,000 to have the witness killed.

Krueger was originally in custody for criminal damage to property and other charges.
