CHICAGO (WLS) -- The woman who is the inspiration for ABC's hit show "Scandal" was honored Monday by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Judy Smith is the founder and president of Smith and Company, a leading crisis communications firm.

Monday, the attorney received the first-ever Vanguard Award at the coalition's women's luncheon, which recognizes women who fight for equality and justice on behalf of others.

"Because what this has done is said to so many network executives, that if you put good television on and there's someone that looks like me, that people will watch it," Smith said.

Toni Preckwinkle, president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, was also honored, receiving the 2014 Trailblazer Award.
