CHICAGO -- Governor Pat Quinn is urging state lawmakers to take action against gun violence.

Quinn and Congresswoman Robin Kelly spent time at 109th and Throop in Morgan Park to stand with families and communities.

The location is the site of a recent deadly shooting.

The governor pushed lawmakers to pass the Illinois Public Safety Act, banning the sale or delivery of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines in Illinois, and requiring background checks for the transfer of guns.

"I think it's very, very important that we the people of Illinois fight very hard for laws that protect the people," Quinn said. "We've had too much violence in this city, in this state."

Alderman Joe Moore of the 49th Ward is also calling for tougher gun laws one day after witnessing a deadly shooting.

It happened in the 1300 block of West Devon in Rogers Park Saturday.
