CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago fire officials say a private contractor working in the area of 31st and Wentworth hit a gas main in front of an elderly home, prompting a Level 2 Hazmat. The gas main has now been capped, officials confirm.

Residents of the elderly home were moved from the lower floors to the upper floors in order to ensure their safety without exposing them to the cold weather.

People's Gas issued a statement Wednesday evening about the incident:

Peoples Gas is repairing the damage caused by a third party earlier today at 3100 S. Wentworth, which temporarily disrupted natural gas service to four CHA buildings in the 3100 and 3200 blocks of S. Wentworth Avenue.

The Natural gas service which provides heat to all four buildings has been restored. Cooking gas service for 3120 S. Wentworth will remain off until tomorrow when final repairs and restoration to this building can be completed.
