LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Libertyville residents marked Memorial Day with a parade to remember those who gave their lives in war and those who serve.

Some of the lives of veterans at Monday's parade span almost nine decades.

Don Carter, 89, served in the U.S. Army in WWII. Reflecting on memories stirs up emotion.

"That's too difficult," Carter said. "It's all the things you remember."

Carter saw the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He said Monday is a day to think deeply about those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"We have to remember what all these guys did," he said.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin joined the parade along with U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider.

Recent reports of delayed health care for some veterans cast a shadow on the solemn day.

"The system is not good enough," Durbin said. "It's starting to catch up but it's not good enough. We've got to provide these services and benefits that we promised these people."
