CHICAGO -- A man who was shot and injured by a Chicago police officer after attacking him with a knife has died, the department said Friday morning.

The man had lunged at the officer with a knife after police responded to a report of a threatened suicide Thursday night in the 400 block of East Marquette, officials said.

According to police, the man approached and attacked the officer, striking his protective vest with the knife. Police say he then charged a second time, prompting the officer to discharge his weapon.

A knife was recovered at the scene and the incident is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority.

The Medical Examiner identified the man as Terrence Gilbert, 25, of the 500 block of East 67th Street. He was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital.
