CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy announced Wednesday that Chicago police have seized more than 3,600 illegal firearms so far in 2014.

According to McCarthy, Chicago officers recover more illegal guns than any other city in the country.

McCarthy was joined by Grand Crossing 3rd District Commander James Jones in calling for stronger state gun laws to help fight the flow of illegal weapons into Chicago.

"We will continue implementing our policing strategy in close coordination with our community partners, and the city will continue investing in prevention programs, but we all know there is much more work to be done," said McCarthy. "Our efforts will continued until every Chicago resident enjoys the same sense of safety, but to truly address gun violence we need stronger gun laws to keep illegal guns off our streets and out of our communities."
