CHICAGO (WLS) -- May is National Military Appreciation Month. ABC7 Eyewitness News is saluting the armed forces each Monday in May.

Sailors from Naval Station Great Lakes joined ABC7 Monday morning. Master Chief Ryan Lamkin spoke on the annual Fourth of July celebration on July 3 and 4 this year.

It's open to the public and admission is free. There will be fireworks on both nights.

The naval station was established in 1911. It's the navy's only recruit training command with more than 38,000 recruits graduating each year.

The Great Lakes Naval Museum is about to undergo a comprehensive rebranding campaign that will see it transform into the National Museum of the American Sailor.
