INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLS) -- Police are expected to bring murder charges against Major Davis, Jr., 25, in the shooting death of Indianapolis Police Officer Perry Renn.

Renn, 51, responded to a report of shots fired around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when he confronted the suspect in an alley on the city's north side. Police said officers exchanged gunfire with Davis.

Davis is accused of fatally shooting Officer Renn with an assault rifle. The 22-year department veteran later died at the hospital.

Davis was shot by another responding officer and is listed in critical condition.

Police reports show Davis has had several encounters with police but only one conviction, a criminal misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge filed in August 2008.
