A man was recovering Saturday from severe sunburn after he and another person were rescued after spending nearly a week stranded at sea off the coast of Florida.

The two people left St. Lucie County, Florida, in a sailboat headed to the Bahamas, but they got stuck in bad weather and eventually anchored the boat, Petty Officer Jon-Paul Rios of the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami told ABC News Saturday.

The day the boat was anchored remained unclear, Rios said.

The boat's battery died and the passengers were unable to call for help, Rios said.

The disabled boat was then rescued by the Coast Guard with assist from a Carnival cruise ship.

Carnival Cruises told ABC News in a statement that one of its ships "came to the aid of a sailboat off the coast of the Bahamas earlier this week.

"The ship worked in conjunction with the United States Coast Guard to assist the vessel in distress," Carnival said.

One of the two passengers, a man, was severely sunburned and needed medical attention, Rios said. He was taken to the Bahamas, an official from Riviera Beach, Florida Fire Rescue said, and was then brought to Florida Saturday to be treated for second-degree burns to his face and legs.

The second passenger, who was healthy, stayed on the disabled boat and was towed to the Bahamas by the Coast Guard, Rios said.

On Saturday Riviera Beach Fire Rescue said the trip began 14 days prior and the passengers were stranded for six days. Rios said Saturday it was unclear how long they were stranded, but said the passengers left on the trip roughly one week prior.
