Patrol officer shoots man on Northwest Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago police officer shot a man who they said pointed a weapon at them on the city's Northwest Side, near the site of the busy Puerto Rican Festival.

Police said around 9 p.m. Sunday, officers on patrol in the 1600-block of North Washtenaw Avenue saw a man walking with a large group of people who they thought might have been carrying a gun. The man allegedly took off running when he spotted police.

Authorities said when the officers told the suspect to drop the weapon, he turned around to face them. Police said that's when one of the officers shot him in the lower section of his body.

Police said the officers administered first aid, applying a tourniquet to the suspect, who is believed to be in his 20s. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Chicago fire officials said.

Police arrested another person who allegedly tried to interfere with the officers who took the first suspect into custody. Charges are pending against both suspects.

No one else was hurt in the shooting. Investigators said officers recovered a gun at the scene.

The incident will be investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates all police-involved shootings.

The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, per CPD policy.
