MALTA, Ill. (WLS) -- A DeKalb County Sheriff's Deputy was attacked while attempting to arrest a 16-year-old at Kishwaukee College, police said.

The deputy attempted to arrest the teen for stealing a cellphone when the teen allegedly broke free and began beating the officer in the 21100-block of Malta Road Wednesday, police said.

After a brief chase through campus, the teen was arrested - but while being handcuffed, a man allegedly attempted to prevent the arrest by assaulting the officer, police said.

Both suspects were taken into custody and charged. Maurice D. Hayes, the adult, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of obstruction of justice.

The officer suffered lacerations, bruises and abrasions to the head, but is expected to recover, police said.
