Husband fatally shot wife, wounded sister-in-law in Roseland murder-suicide, police said

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man fatally shot his wife and critically injured her sister before turning the gun on himself, police said, after an altercation in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood.

The female victims' father, Terrell Holmes, said 37-year-old James Sterling and his daughter, 29-year-old Amy Holmes Sterling, were in the process of getting divorced. He also said she had been receiving threats and decided to move the couple's two daughters, ages 5 and 6, to her family's home.

Holmes said his daughters planned to pick up his granddaughters from his house when the couple began to argue around 10 p.m. Sunday in the 400-block of West 104th Street on Chicago's Far South Side.

Holmes said Sterling grabbed a gun, allegedly shot and killed Holmes-Sterling and struck her sister, 26-year-old Aerial Holmes, in the shoulder before shooting himself.

She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, but was released before 11 a.m. and is recovering at home.

Area South police confirmed the shooting under investigation was a murder-suicide.

Sterling's family did not comment on the incident.
