FLOSSMOOR, Ill. (WLS) -- A south suburban woman was sexually assaulted and robbed by a man who forced his way into her home, police said.

According to police, the intruder cut a window screen and assaulted the victim in her bedroom, just around the corner from the Flossmoor Police Station.

Residents on the quiet, tree-lined 12000-block of Douglas Avenue in Flossmoor are still shaken by what happened to one of their neighbors.

"It puts everyone on high alert. We have alarm systems now. Everyone's getting alarm systems, shades, and locking our doors," said Michael Shanks, resident.

Morgan and Michael shanks are brand-new parents to a daughter who is just a few months old. They live on Douglas Avenue where the break-in occurred.

Police said a man cut a window screen and entered the home through the kitchen shortly after midnight Sunday morning.

The female resident was asleep in a bedroom, police said, and was sexually assaulted by the intruder, who then demanded money before running away.

"Really shocking. Really frightening. Kind of rattles your whole world thinking about it and feel really awful for our neighbor," said Morgan Shanks.

Police say no vehicle was seen leaving the area. The victim's home is less than two blocks from the Flossmoor police station, where investigators are asking for the public's help.

This neighborhood of families is now left with sleepless nights.

"Doors locked, lights on outside," said Michael Shanks.

"Everybody's just been pretty shocked, can't believe that this happened here on our street. Everybody's just trying to come up with a plan to help look out for each other," said Morgan Shanks.

Police have only vague description of the suspect, who was wearing grey sweat pants and a black shirt. Investigators are asking anyone who was out in this area Saturday night or Sunday morning around midnight to give them a call.
