Police are searching for the man who they say left a 3-year-old child in the car with a gun and fled.

PHILADELPHIA -- Police are searching for the man who they say fled after an attempted traffic stop, leaving a 3-year-old child and a gun in the car.

It all began around 7:00 p.m. at 62nd and Locust in West Philadelphia.

Police say officers pulled over a Chevy Impala that had a license plate.

That's when the driver of the car took off and led officers on a chase that ended in Upper Darby.

Along West Chester Pike, officers spotted the car parked and the driver got out and fled on foot towards a golf course.

Inside the car, police found a 3-year-old boy and a loaded handgun. Fortunately the child was not harmed.

"Obviously a 3-year-old kid does have good motor skills so we're fortunate that the kid didn't pick that gun up. It's not holstered, and it clearly is loaded. So this individual is reckless, careless and the family members need to do the right thing and the public also needs to do the right thing. People know who this individual is because apparently he may have relatives in this area," Lt. Johnnie Walker, Philadelphia Police.

Police say the owner of the car is the child's mother and the suspect's girlfriend.

Investigators took the woman in for questioning.

Sources say initially she wasn't cooperative but has since agreed to help police.

The suspect remains at large and police continue to search for him.
